TIANJIN HOUSE: A Design by reMIX Studio

Project Timeline: 2017

Location: Tianjin, China

Project Type: Residential Transformation

Status: Unrealized Concept - SD Phase

Design Context: Custom-designed for a young couple seeking transformation of their suburban Tianjin residence. The project was carried out with an indepent design scheme that disrupt traditional multi-storey house layouts and incorporate essential functional elements suitable for dly living and work.

Entry Atrium Light Enrichment

By modifying the building's slabs, we created a triple-height atrium near the front entrance. This innovative feature connects all three levels vertically while allowing ample natural light into the interior without compromising the existing structure's integrity.

Linear Flow with Terrazzo Flooring

A continuous grey terrazzo-lined hallway serves as the central spine of the residence, facilitating an uninterrupted journey through the home and seamlessly connecting public and private spaces.

Progression of Space and Circulation

The original centralized vertical circulation was reimagined into a linear path, enhancing spatial fluidity. This design choice enables a smooth transition between different areas while optimizing space utilization.

Integration of Reading Volume with Sunken Garden Access

A volume featuring a floating shelf wall is strategically placed inside the addition, which overlooks the sunken garden at the back of the house. The strs within this structure facilitate access not only to the second floor but also provide storage for the owners' extensive book collection.

Longitudinal Section Diagram

To illustrate the spatial configuration and functional integration across different levels of TIANJIN HOUSE, a detled longitudinal section diagram is provided as follows:

TIANJIN HOUSE is a conceptual design that challenges conventional domestic layouts by prioritizing light, spatial flow, and functional integration.
