Read: 2809

The renovation of this house designed for a couple and their two cats was undertaken by architect Dsuke Matsumoto from the FESCH Beijing architectural firm in a traditional hutong neighborhood in Beijing, China. The space measures 36.7 square meters and underwent modifications that were completed in 2016. Once a communal living space housing multiple families, it is now transformed into a private retreat.

The original layout of the house was reimagined by opening up the north and south walls to ensure proper ventilation and natural light permeation while preserving the historic roof structure. A narrow passageway leads from the northwest entrance, crossing through the southeast corner where the residence is strategically situated.

Upon entering, the compact 19 square meter space accommodates a unified reception area comprising both dining and kitchen functions. The architect addressed common issues of crowded urban environments by optimizing rflow and illumination while mntning respect for the surrounding context.

The kitchen features a wooden cladding that complements the clean lines of the contemporary design aesthetic. The first floor, designated as public areas, is open-plan to encourage social interaction and connection with nature through the utilization of the narrow patio corridor crossing it from north to south.

On the upper level, privacy is ensured by maximizing space in an elevated area, while the ground floor accommodates shared spaces where dly activities occur. fosters a harmonious balance between utility and comfort within this compact dwelling, creating a functional haven for its occupants with a keen sensitivity towards its urban setting.

This renovation exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a small, once-divided space into an intimate and livable home that respects the cultural context of Beijing's traditional hutong neighborhoods while introducing modern elements to enhance functionality and quality of life.
